VMYG Sailing Days

We usually gather from 10am to 3.30pm depending on the weather. Because a day has been specified for a particular class of yacht i.e. 10R, vintage marbleheads etc., please do not be put off by this as there is plenty of spare water for you to sail your yacht and in the case of Gosport there is a second separate lake for your use.

2011 Grand Festival of Sail

The highly successful September Model Yachting Association Centenary meeting at the Round Pond was our principal achievement in 2011, with some remarkable boats on display, (see report and video elsewhere on the site); meantime hearty thanks to all who contributed, especially Graham Frazer and his team at the Model Yacht Sailing Association, Kensington, Secretary Alistair Roach for being the organisational hub, Roger and Peter Stollery for a whole string of Marbleheads and the odd gazebo tent or two as well as Turning Pole editor Martin Bandey for an entire horsebox full of wonderful early yachts. It has been decided to retain this time of year for our principal sailing day again to avoid the risk of weed; so next year’s date is 16 September 2012….book the slot in your diaries now!

Sailing Days
VMYG sailing days are spaced at broadly monthly intervals, except where we unavoidably have only one week separating Poole and Hampton in August, both well worth attending. Meetings have been set with weed in mind, summer fixtures being in less affected lakes or ones which reckon to have solved the problem....Poole is on the edge though, so ring for latest information at the time.

Racing
Classic/Vintage racing sponsored by VMYG, Hampton Court Model Yacht Club and Fleetwood Model Yacht and Boat Club continues to grow; an impressive fleet of classic race ready A's based at Hampton Court now number twelve; it is also encouraging that modern 36R & A racing at Gosport continues to flourish with two extremely well supported series, the club probably now being the UK’s principal free sailing Club. Bournville is offering modern free sailing in 2012 with the 36R Nationals, the ‘Pugwash’ races and the Midland District Championships.

Attendance
The excellent VMYG radio meeting earlier in the year at the delightful Frensham (ex Royal Yachting Association club of the year), is repeated in the Spring but not in the Autumn as it was poorly supported in 2011. Attendances have continued to diminish pond side, reliant on the faithful few principally in London and the North (the latter now to be moved to Cleethorpes). Members could maybe ring each other to support their local water meetings in the same way that Cleethorpes do.
